Wolfpack Falls After Eight Innings

RALEIGH – After over three hours of play, the Wolfpack softball team dropped the finale of the Wolfpack Classic after falling short to James Madison, 14-11, in eight innings.
The Dukes wasted no time getting on the board as Hannah Shifflet hit a home run of the first pitch of the game. JMU later recorded two doubles to increase the lead to four.
Rylee Wyman entered the circle for the Pack at the start of the second. She faced four batters , with one strike out before retiring the top of the inning.
The bottom of the fourth opened with two walks for the Wolfpack. After Madison Inscoe took second and Taylor Ensley took first, Hannah Goodwin stepped into the box. She swung at the first pitch thrown and drilled it over the outfield wall for a three run homer. The hit was Goodwin's second homer in less than 24 hours.
Freshman Nadia Sykes stepped into the box and hit a ball in foul territory on the right side, but the ball rolled back into play allowing her to reach first. Her hit allowed Ellie Goins, who was at second, to score and tie the meeting four all. The Pack ended the second inning with four runs and two hits.
JMU scored two more in the top of the third after an error by the Wolfpack and a single by Kate Carrier brought Bella Hensler home.
Two outs had nothing on Taylor Ensley in the bottom of the third as she stepped in the box and drilled the second pitch thrown her way past the outfield wall. The homer was the fifth in five days for the sophomore.
NC State struggled defensively in the second half of the game, as they picked up an error in both the fourth and fifth innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Dukes walked Katlyn Pavlick and Ensley singled up the middle. Both Pack runners advanced to the next base on a pass ball by JMU. Alissa Humphrey walked Goodwin before hitting Amanda Hasler with a pitch, giving the Wolfpack a free run. NC State scored a second in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch by Humphrey. The Pack finished the fifth trailing the Dukes, 9-7.
The Dukes doubled down the left line in the top of the sixth to increase the lead back to four. Wyman struck out the last batter faced to end the top half of the inning and the Pack stepped back up to the plate to attempt to minimize the Dukes lead. After walking two, Inscoe stepped into the box and singled to left field, later advancing to second on the Dukes' throw. The Pack finished the inning trailing JMU by two once again.
The Wolfpack held the Dukes scoreless in the top of the seventh and retired the inning after a run down that ended with Wyman tagging out the runner.
Hasler started the Pack's attempt to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh with a single to right field. Fellow freshman Ellie Goins stepped into the box and drilled the second pitch thrown her way past the outfield wall. Her two run homer tied the game 11-all. NC State was unable to take the lead so the meeting went into an eighth inning.
JMU wasted no time taking back the lead as a single down the left line brought one home. With one on base, Hannah Hennessey hit a homer to left field, giving JMU the 14-11 lead.
After retiring the top half of the inning, the Pack managed to get two on base but was unable to score after two strikeouts.
Ensley and Hasler led the bat with two hits on four at bats each, while Goodwin finished with three RBI's.

The Wolfpack heads north to Blacksburg, Va. for opening weekend of ACC play. The first game is scheduled for Friday March 3 and first pitch is scheduled for 6pm on ACCNX.
