RALEIGH – Three home runs and shutdown pitching led NC State's baseball team to its sixth straight win to open the 2023 season, posting a series-clinching 7-0 victory over Belmont Saturday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
NC State (6-0) scored six of its seven runs via the long ball with shortstop Payton Green crushing two home runs and left fielder Carter Trice belting a three-run home run himself in the 7-0 win.
On the mound, starting pitcher Matt Willadsen shut down Belmont (2-5) over six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts. After walking the opening batter of the game, Willadsen retired 12 straight Bruins to face the minimum through four innings.
Green led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to give the Pack a 1-0 lead. After both teams went scoreless in the third inning, the Pack pushed three across in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
Will Marcy opened the inning with a walk before Green again recorded an extra-base hit, doubling down the left-field line to put two runners in scoring position for Trice. Trice then attacked the first pitch of his at-bat, crushing a three-run home run into the Belmont bullpen in left field.
After another scoreless frame from Willadsen in the fifth, Marcy again jumpstarted the Wolfpack offense with a two-out double down the left-field line. Green then stepped to the plate and registered his second home run of the night, extending the Pack's lead to 6-0.
NC State scored its seventh and final run of the night in the bottom of the seventh inning after Trice stole two bases in the inning before coming home on an error by the third baseman.
Reliever Rio Britton made his NC State debut out of the bullpen, tossing two hitless innings with a strikeout. Britton then turned it over to freshman Everette Harris, who preserved the shutout with a scoreless ninth inning. Harris struck out the final batter of the night to secure the series victory.
Green (three) and Kalae Harrison (two) each recorded multi-hit performances. Green's two home runs and a double helped him record a team-best 10 total bases while scoring a team-high three times.
NC State looks to move to 7-0 Sunday afternoon with the series finale at Doak Field at Dail Park. The Wolfpack's series finale against Belmont is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on ACC Network Extra.
