SERIES HISTORY AGAINST THE CHANTICLEERS
The Pack holds a 19-14 advantage in the all-time series against Coastal Carolina, holding a 3-2 record in the past five meetings. NC State was supposed to face off against Coastal Carolina in Conway in 2021, but the game was canceled. The most recent matchup between the Wolfpack and Chanticleers came on March 4, 2020, when the Pack blew out the visiting Chanticleers 24-7 in seven innings. The victory extended NC State's winning streak to open the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season to 12 games. With a win on Wednesday, NC State would secure a win in its true road opener for the fifth time in the last six seasons and eighth time in the last 10 seasons.
OPENING 2023 WITH A SWEEP
For the fourth straight time, the Pack recorded a three-game sweep to open its season. NC State has opened with a 3-0 record with three consecutive wins over the same opponent in 2023, 2022, 2020 and 2019. The Wolfpack outscored Wagner at a newly renovated Doak Field at Dail Park 26-3.
SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS
Coastal Carolina (2-1) opened its season at home by hosting the Baseball at the Beach tournament at Springs Brooks Stadium. The Chanticleers' offense exploded for a combined 25 runs over its first two games, notching victories over Fairfield (14-7) and Middle Tennessee (11-3). A 4-2 loss to VCU on Sunday denied Coastal what would've been its first 3-0 start since 2019.
NO FREE PASSES
The NC State pitching staff did not allow a single walk in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Wagner, which is the first time it has posted zero walks as a staff since a 10-3 win over Tennessee Tech on Feb. 22, 2020. The pitching trio of Matt Willadsen, Baker Nelson and Justin Lawson scattered just six hits with nine strikeouts in the comeback victory.
SPINNING IT LIKE ITS 1968
The Wolfpack offense shined throughout the Opening Weekend, producing a total of 26 runs with eight multi-run plate appearances as a team. Despite the offensive success, the Wolfpack pitching staff was the story on Opening Weekend, allowing just three runs in its three-game sweep of Wagner. The three runs allowed over the opening three games is NC State's lowest number of runs allowed over its first three games since allowing only two runs in a 3-0 start in 1968. Other impressive Wolfpack pitching statistics from Opening Weekend are listed below:
• Entered the week ranked sixth nationally in ERA (1.00) and first in the ACC
• Entered the week ranked sixth nationally in WHIP (0.78) and first in the ACC
• Entered the week ranked 12th nationally in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (2.00) and first in the ACC
• Entered the week ranked ninth nationally in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (5.00) and first in the ACC
• Baker Nelson was one of just four pitchers in the country to record two pitching victories on Opening Weekend
MAKING THEIR DEBUTS
Plenty of new faces help comprise the 2023 NC State baseball roster, which features 17 newcomers (10 freshmen and seven transfers). Over the weekend, Wolfpack nation got to see the NC State debuts of 13 players in Red and White — Eli Serrano III, Trevor Candelaria, Carter Trice, Kalae Harrison, Parker Nolan, Cannon Peebles, Isaiah Barkett, Michael Gupton, Matt Heavner, Dominic Fritton, Creed Watkins, Andrew Shaffner and Everette Harris.
AVENT'S CHASE TO 1,000 & 1,200
NC State baseball head coach Elliott Avent has reached many milestones throughout his collegiate coaching career, entering the 2023 season with a 1,186-784 overall record and a 962-571 record at NC State. With three wins over the weekend, Avent sits just 11 wins away from career victory No. 1,200 and 35 victories away from NC State career win No. 1,000.
With career win No. 1,200, Avent would become the 29th coach in NCAA history to surpass 1,200 career victories.
UP NEXT
NC State will host Belmont for a three-game weekend series at Doak Field at Doak Park. The series against the Bruins begins Friday at 3 p.m. All three games will be broadcasted live on ACC Network Extra.
