Pack Concludes Opening Weekend of 2023-24 Season in Boston, Winston-Salem

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State track and field team opened the 2023-24 season today, competing in the Winston-Salem College Kick-off and the Sharon-Colyear Danville Season Opener.

Winston-Salem College Kickoff:

JUMPS
Jakerra Covington started off the new season strong, producing a top-10 time in the women's high jump. The Rockingham, N.C. native leaped 1.54m to finish in seventh place.

THROWS
Freshman Ta'Honny Exum made her college debut in the women's shot put and recorded a mark of 13.76m to finish fifth. Sydney Freeman (12.48m) and Mahkayla Hart (12.44m) also placed inside the top-10, finishing ninth and 10th, respectively.

In the women's weight throw, Makala Wright turned in a mark of 18.44m to finish second overall on the podium. Freeman also competed in the event and collected her top-10 finish of the day after submitting a mark of 17.52m. She was followed by Hart, who finished in seventh after throwing 16.50m.

Sharon-Colyear Danville Season Opener:

MIDDLE DISTANCE
First-year Angelina Napolean made her collegiate track and field debut and placed 13th in the women's mile with a time of 4:43.64. Kate Putman also debuted in the race with a time of 4:59.86.

DISTANCE
Two weeks after helping lead the NC State women's cross country team to a third straight National Championship, Sam Bush opened her track and field campaign with a 12th-place time of 9:01.83 in the women's 3000m.

UP NEXT
The Pack returns to action on Friday, January 12 for the opening day of the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
