Joseph Nets Late Game-Winner to Move Wolfpack to 2-0
8/21/2022 4:05:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RALEIGH – Senior forward Jameese Joseph buried a game-winning goal in the 87th minute to lift the NC State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over VCU on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Less than 10 minutes after VCU (0-1-1) tied the match at 1-1 behind a goal from Aisha Maughan, the Wolfpack attacked quickly to turn a tie into a late victory. Forward Alexis Strickland received a ball near midfield, spun away from her defender and weighted a through ball to Joseph for the game-winning strike. Joseph needed only a few dribbles to cut inside and unleash a right-footed strike into the bottom-left corner of the VCU goal.
Despite outshooting VCU 9-4 in the second half, NC State (2-0) allowed the equalizer when Anna Bagley found Maughan inside the box for the Rams' opening goal. The Wolfpack increased pressure on VCU following Maughan's strike, firing three shots and earning three corner kicks before Joseph notched the go-ahead goal.
Heavy rain slowed play in the opening 45 minutes, but the Wolfpack netted the opening goal on a quick break with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Jaiden Thomas played a pass down the right flank to Fernanda Soto, who took only a few touches before finding Annika Wohner in the box for her first goal of the season. Wohner's strike gave the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead entering the halftime break.
A lunging save from Wolfpack goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta kept NC State in front in the 60th minute. NC State then logged the next four shots, including efforts from Leyah Hall-Robinson and Annika Wohner that forced saves from VCU goalkeeper Whitney Horton in the 68th and 69th minutes.
The Wolfpack outshot VCU 13-10 in Sunday's matchup, firing six attempts on target. Echezarreta tallied four saves on the afternoon.
