Joseph Nets Thrilling Game-Winner to Lift NC State to 1-0 Win Over Campbell
8/25/2022 10:42:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RALEIGH – Senior forward Jameese Joseph made it two straight games with a late game-winning goal as the No. 21 NC State women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Campbell Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Following a Campbell corner kick with a minute remaining, NC State's Jaiden Thomas started a breakaway with a pinpoint long ball from the Wolfpack's own end, finding Joseph after a bounce for the winning strike. Joseph fought off jersey pulls and netted the game-winning goal with her right foot.
And only one shoe on.
Joseph's late winner came only a moment after a Campbell defender clipped off her left shoe. She gathered herself a few steps inside the box before burying the ball into the back of the net.
NC State (3-0) increased pressure in the final 45 minutes, outshooting Campbell (0-2-1) 7-1 in the second half. The Wolfpack tied the Fighting Camels with three shots on target.
One of the Wolfpack's best chances came in the 69th minute when Fernanda Soto struck the crossbar from outside the box. Lulu Guttenberger then fired a shot on target for the Wolfpack in the 85th minute, forcing a save from Campbell goalkeeper Stephanie Martelli.
In net, goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta finished with three saves to clinch her second clean sheet of the season. Thomas' assist on the game-winning goal makes it back-to-back games with an assist for the senior.
With the win, NC State moves to 3-0 for the first fall season since 2017. The victory also extends NC State's unbeaten record over the Fighting Camels to 15-0-2 all-time.
UP NEXT
NC State will conclude its four-game homestand to open the 2022 season when the Wolfpack hosts No. 11 Georgetown on Sunday night. Kickoff at Dail Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. and will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
