CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 3 NC State women's tennis (20-4, 8-3 ACC) put together another incredible battle against a fellow ranked ACC foe but ultimately came up just short at No. 14 Virginia (16-4, 8-3 ACC) on Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers won 4-3 in a tight match that came down to the final court.
After straight-set wins nearly across the board in singles action, the match was decided on court six where Nell Miller and Sara Ziodato faced off in a three setter. Miller did a tremendous job forcing a third set after going a frame down, but she was broken to go down 3-1 in the final set and Ziodato closed out the 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1 win to clinch for the Cavaliers.
That deciding match came after a back-and-forth battle throughout singles action during which NC State got wins from Priska Nugroho and Amelia Rajecki in the middle of the lineup to keep the team score within one.
The contest opened with some doubles point dramatics that came down to court two. Jaeda Daniel and Nell Miller kicked off the outing with a 6-3 win in a ranked matchup against No. 17 Emma Navarro and Hibah Shaikh, but the Cavaliers got a 6-3 win of their own on court three.
Abigail Rencheli and Amelia Rajecki gutted out a thriller of a win to clinch the point, beating Sofia Munera and Natasha Subhash 6-4. After going down a break early, the Wolfpack duo fought their way back into the match. They ultimately got a break of their own to go up 5-4 and held serve on deciding point to close out the victory.
Virginia then went on to win four of six singles matches to earn the team victory.
NC State will play its final two matches of the regular season at home next weekend. The Wolfpack welcomes Louisville to the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Friday, April 15 and will host Notre Dame the next day for Senior Day.
