TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – NC State baseball (10-7, 0-3 ACC) was unable to overcome an early deficit in its series opener at No. 8 Florida State (12-5, 3-1 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium, suffering a 13-5 loss.
The Seminoles plated 10 runs across the first three innings and the Wolfpack chipped away at its deficit with two runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth, but Florida State answered by tacking on three more runs in its final two frames.
The Seminoles struck in the first inning when Jaime Ferrer scored on Alex Toral's double down the left field line after leading off the side with a single to right field.
NC State looked to counter in the top of the second when it loaded the bases up on a pair of walks by Devonte Brown and Payton Green and an outfield single by Dominic Pilolli, but couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. In the bottom frame, back-to-back doubles by Colton Vincent and Ferrer followed by Logan Lacey's three-run home run to left field extended Florida State's lead to 6-0 in the second.
An RBI groundout followed by two run-scoring outfield singles plated four more runs for the Seminoles in the third to give them a 10-0 advantage.
Pilolli put the Pack on the board in the fourth when he belted his third home run of the year, and then Payton Green followed up two at bats later with his first career homer to right field, making it 10-2.
In the sixth Green homered for the second time in as many at bats with a three-run shot to left field to make it 10-5. Will Marcy took first on a hit-by-pitch to start the inning, and then Pilolli's bunt single followed by Jacob Godman's sac bunt put runners in scoring position for Green.
Ferrer tallied his fourth hit of the game in the seventh, driving in runners in scoring position with a single to right field, and then AJ Shaver's sac fly in the eighth gave the Noles an eight-run lead heading into the final inning. Three consecutive outs in the ninth for the Pack closed out the game.
Dominic Piolli turned in a career-high 4-for-4 day at the plate with a run batted in, while Green was responsible for the other four RBIs with the first two homers of his career. Additionally, pitchers Logan Adams and Win Scott combined for 5.1 innings in relief and surrendered three earned runs while tallying seven strikeouts.
NC State and Florida State will meet Sunday in a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Dick Howser Stadium, with game two to begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Both games will be broadcast on the ACCNX with an audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the TuneIn App.
