WASHINGTON, D.C. – NC State women's soccer (0-0-1) opened up its 2021 season on Thursday afternoon with a 2-2 (2OT) draw against ninth-ranked Georgetown (0-0-1) at Shaw Field.
Five freshmen made their first official collegiate start, and Michaela Virgin additionally saw playing time in her first official collegiate match.
"For such a young group, in their first game, to get a point away against the ninth-ranked team in the nation is a credit to our players. Georgetown is an older team with College Cup experience, and we played them great at times. There's plenty to improve, but today was a good start," said head coach Tim Santoro.
Jameese Joseph opened up the scoring in the fourth minute with an unassisted goal that was shot into the bottom right corner, tallying the Wolfpack's first goal of the year.
Georgetown answered back in the 16th minute through Gia Vicari from a close shot that went to the bottom left corner of the net.
The Hoyas took a 2-1 lead in the 50th minute thanks to a Sydney Cummings header goal off of a corner kick.
NC State answered back in the 65th minute via a long free kick delivered by Lulu Guttenberger that was headed in by Jenna Butler.
In the overtime periods there were a combined four shots between both squads, but neither team could manage to find the back of the net for the golden goal.
NC State and Georgetown each tallied 10 shots in the contest, as the Wolfpack put six on target while the Hoyas had just three on frame.
The Pack will be back in action Sunday when it travels to Old Dominion for its second of a three-game road swing to start the season. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at ODU Soccer Complex in Norfolk, Va.
