RALEIGH – Even after a nine-day break from competition, NC State baseball (23-14) remained red-hot on Tuesday evening as it defeated UNCW (26-17), 9-1, at Doak Field at Dail Park.
With the victory, the Wolfpack completes the home-and-home series sweep over the Seahawks.
Six of the team's nine runs came by way of the home run, as Vojtech Mensik, Luca Tresh, Jonny Butler and Devonte Brown each went yard in the contest. It was the fourth time this season the squad has hit at least four homers in a single game.
Behind the hot bats was a dominant outing on the mound by Chris Villaman (5-2) who yielded just two hits and one walk while fanning a career-best 12 batters in the eight innings he pitched. Matt Willadsen tossed the final inning of the contest and tallied two strikeouts for a combined 14 on the night, matching the team's season best in a single game.
NC State plated three runs in the second thanks to Brown's one-out RBI single to right field, scoring Tresh after he reached on an error to start the side. Mensik then crushed his third home run of the season to left field to drive in the other two runs.
In the third, an RBI groundout by Butler followed by a solo shot to left field by Tresh, his ninth of the year, extended NC State's lead to 5-0.
The Seahawks' only run of the night game in the fourth when Matt Suggs led off the inning with a home run to left field, making the score 5-1.
Butler belted his ninth long ball of the season in the fifth inning to make it 6-1, and then added another run in the seventh when he scored on a passed ball after hitting a one-out triple off the left field wall. Brown's two-run homer to left field in the seventh, his eighth on the year, capped off the Pack's scoring.
