RALEIGH – NC State baseball (19-13) will begin a four-game road swing Tuesday when it travels to Boone, N.C., to play a midweek contest with Appalachian State (15-20). First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and there will be a free audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the TuneIn App.
STARTING PITCHERS
LHP Chris Villaman (NCSU) vs. RHP Trey Tujetsch (APP)
SERIES HISTORY
Tuesday will be the second time this season and 18th in the all-time series that the Wolfpack and Mountaineers have met as NC State leads the series, 14-3.
The teams last met on April 6 in Raleigh, and the Pack earned a 13-2 victory which marked head coach Elliott Avent's 900th career win at the helm of NC State. The Pack used a nine-run sixth inning to power past App State, highlighted by Tyler McDonough's 3-for-4 performance and Chris Villaman's seven strikeouts in six complete innings on the mound.
LAST TIME OUT
NC State collected its third series sweep of the season, and second over a ranked opponent, when it took down then-No. 15 Virginia Tech in Raleigh. It was the first time this season that the Hokies had suffered a series sweep loss.
The Pack opened the weekend on Friday with a 3-1 victory, holding off a late rally behind 6.2 shutout innings by Sam Highfill. On Sunday, the teams played a doubleheader due to rain in the area on Saturday. NC State defeated Va. Tech, 11-3, in game one to clinch the series, and then made a seventh-inning 7-6 comeback in the nightcap to complete the sweep.
JACK OF ALL TRADES
McDonough has been a vital piece to the Wolfpack's batting order and defensive alignment. He is on a 49-game reached base streak, which is the longest currently held by an ACC player, and is the third-longest by a Wolfpack player since 1999.
In his career, McDonough has made 109 starts in 110 career games played and has committed just one error defensively. He has spent time most of his time in center field but has also played at second and third base.
FLASHING THE LEATHER
NC State continues to be one of the top defensive teams in the nation with a .986 fielding percentage. That mark leads the ACC and ranks second in the NCAA behind Creighton (.987).
The squad has not committed an error in 11 of its last 13 games and has made two or more in an outing just four times this season.
SCOUTING APP STATE
The Mountaineers head into Tuesday's meeting on a four-game loss streak after falling to then-No. 19 Charlotte, 11-8, and suffering a series sweep to Troy last week.
App State is batting .240 as a team and is led by Robbie Young who owns a .301 clip. Luke Drumheller and Kendall McGowan continue to be two of the top hitters for the Mountaineers, as Drumheller paces the squad with 38 hits and 29 runs batted in while McGowan has compiled a .426 slugging percentage with 11 extra-base hits this season.
On the mound, projected starting pitcher Trey Tujetsch has made three starts in his seven appearances and owns an 8.61 earned-run average with two losses. The pitching staff as a whole has compiled a 6.73 ERA and is averaging 8.28 strikeouts per game.
