CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – NC State baseball (8-9, 4-8 ACC) completed its series sweep on Monday evening against No. 20 North Carolina (13-9, 8-7 ACC) with an 8-3 victory at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
It is the second consecutive series win over the Tar Heels and first series sweep since April 15-17, 2011, which was played in Raleigh. Additionally, it is the first sweep for the Wolfpack in Chapel Hill since April 23-25, 1992.
Starting pitcher Matt Willadsen (2-0) was the story of the game, as he threw a career-long 7.1 innings to put his team in the driver's seat for the sweep after tossing two shutout innings at the end of the suspended game two earlier that afternoon. He scattered seven hits and surrendered the three runs while only allowing one walk.
For the third-straight time in the series, the Wolfpack struck first as a Luca Tresh RBI single and fielder's choice with a runner at third got the squad off to a 2-0 start in the first inning.
In the second, Austin Murr drove Devonte Brown in with a double to right center, then he and J.T. Jarrett capitalized on a wild pitch and Carolina error to give the Pack a 5-0 advantage. Eric Grintz put the Heels on the board in the home half of the second when his single to center field plated Caleb Roberts.
Jose Torres blasted an opposite field home run in the third to put the Pack back up by five, but UNC's Hunter Stokely went yard in the fifth to cut back into his team's deficit and make the score 6-2 in favor of NC State.
In the seventh, Jarrett drew a leadoff walk and then Murr crushed a two-run homer over the right field wall to extend the Pack's lead to 8-2. The Heels led off their half of the inning with a double by Tomas Frick and RBI single from Grintz to try and get something going late, but three outs by the Pack defense left Grintz stranded.
Willadsen issued a one-out walk in the eighth, then Evan Justice took over on the mound and managed to start a 1-4-3 double play to get his team out of the inning unscathed. He came back out in the ninth and put a runner on via a one-out walk, but tallied back-to-back strikeouts to shut the door.
