CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – NC State baseball (7-9, 3-8 ACC) clinched its series against No. 20 North Carolina (13-8, 8-6 ACC) on Monday afternoon with a 6-1 win at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The game was suspended on Saturday afternoon in the bottom of the eighth inning, and was completed on Monday afternoon.
Its victory extends the Wolfpack's win streak in Chapel Hill to four, which dates back to the 2019 series on May 16-18. The win also extended the squad's streak in the 2021 season to three.
Terrell Tatum got the #Pack9 offense going in the second inning with a two-run blast to right center after Jonny Butler led off the inning with a single up the middle. Austin Murr then made it 3-0 in the third when led off with a triple to right field, his first of the year, then crossed home plate on a Carolina miscue.
Angel Zarate put the Heels on the board in the sixth with a solo shot to right center, but NC State responded in the seventh when a Jose Torres infield single and UNC error brought Tyler McDonough home.
In the eighth, Murr launched a two-run home run, the team's second of the game and fourth of the series, following another Tar Heel error that put J.T. Jarrett on base to give the Pack a 6-1 advantage through seven and-a-half innings.
Sam Highfill (1-1) had a phenomenal start in game two, tossing a career-long seven innings and allowing just one earned run while fanning four before play was suspended on Saturday. Once play resumed on Monday afternoon, Matt Willadsen took over on the mound and produced six outs to seal the series victory.
