#Pack9 Drops Scoring Fest With UNCG
2/23/2021 8:30:00 PM | Baseball
The contest was a scoring fest with a combined 29 runs and 32 hits between the Wolfpack and Spartans, featuring two ties and four lead changes.
The Pack managed to jump out to a commanding 7-0 lead through the first four innings, but a seven-run fifth and six-run seventh by the Spartans kept the ball game close to the end. With the teams tied at 13 heading into the ninth, UNCG managed to plate three runs on two hits and an error to secure the victory.
SCORING RECAP
-Murr got the Pack's offense going in the first inning with a leadoff single up the middle, and then scored on Tresh's base hit to left field after getting into scoring position on a wild pitch.
-With two on and no outs, Jonny Butler launched a three-run homer, his second of the year, to right field to give his team the early 4-0 advantage through one complete.
-The Pack plated three more runs in the fourth, extending its lead to seven. J.T. Jarrett led off with a base hit and advanced on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on Murr's outfield single. Tyler McDonough and Tresh then strung together back-to-back doubles to drive in the other two runs in the frame.
-The Spartans managed to tie things up at 7-7 in the fifth inning on five hits and an error.
-NC State battled back in its half of the fifth with three runs thanks to Terrell Tatum's two-run homer, his first of the season, and an RBI fielder's choice.
-The Pack added to its lead in the sixth when Tresh led off with solo shot, his second of the season, over the left field wall. Butler tacked on another run when he took first on a hit-by-pitch, stole second, and eventually crossed home plate by way of a failed pickoff attempt and passed ball.
-UNCG's other big inning came in the seventh when the Spartans scored six runs on five hits, highlighted by Corey Rosier's bases-loaded 2-RBI double to give his team its first lead of the game.
-NC State continued to fight back, answering with a run to knot the score back up at 13 in its half of the seventh thanks to Butler's bases-loaded sacrifice fly.
-After a quiet eighth inning from both teams, UNCG's Greg Hardison's two-out double down the left field line scored the go-ahead run in the ninth, making the score 14-13. An outfield single from Josh Madole along with a Wolfpack error brought across the insurance runs.
OF NOTE
-Starting pitcher Chris Villaman matched his career high in strikeouts with five in the 10 batters he faced. He yielded just one hit through three innings of work.

-Tresh's 4-for-5 outing matched his single-game career best, as he last did so on March 4, 2020 vs. Coastal Carolina.
-Along with turning in his second multi-hit performance of the year, Butler's four RBI's were a career best. Dating back to 2019, he has reached safely in 22 of his last 23 games.
-Carson Falsken tallied his first collegiate hit in the game, a one-out single in the fifth inning.
-McDonough and Murr extended their reached base streaks to 20, which dates back to last season.
