PITTSBURGH, PA. - The NC State gymnastics team recorded its highest score of the season on Sunday, posting a 195.425. Host Pittsburgh recorded a 195.700 and EAGL competitor Towson tabbed a 194.475.
The Wolfpack claimed an individual title on all four events at the meet.
On vault, NC State crossed the 49.000 threshold for the first time in its 2021 campaign with a 49.025. Sophomore Emily Shepard posted a 9.900, the first time the sophomore achieved a score of 9.900 or higher on the apparatus. Her score earned her part of a two-way tie for the individual title. Chloe Negrete anchored the event for NC State with a 9.850, a mark good for third place.
The squad compiled a 49.050 on bars, led by Meredith Robinson's 9.875. Her score tied her career best and was good for a three-way tie for first place. Katie Cox and Shepard each tabbed a 9.850 on bars. The mark tied Cox's career high.
The Wolfpack's first event of the day was beam, and the team improved from its last meet with a 48.425. Negrete earned her first individual title of the meet with a 9.875 in the event.
On floor, Negrete posted a 9.900 that was good for an individual title. As a team, NC State put up a 48.925.
Shepard was the only member of the team to compete in the all-around, taking second place with a 38.700.
STRAIGHT FROM THE PACK: HEAD COACH KIM LANDRUS
"Today was such a resilient effort," said head coach Kim Landrus. "Starting on beam, unfortunately we had to count a major mistake. Never ideal, but this group rallied together to ensure that they would put the event behind them and regroup. Regroup they did…we won the last three events and had so many standout performances.
"Chloe was 'lights-out' today! I'm so proud of her. She is a work horse in the gym and has been focusing on the details and it showed today, winning both beam and floor. Our entire bar group showed such poise after a mistake in the first position.
"A season high score, on the road, with obstacles that had to be overcome…I'm super proud and excited for the potential of this team."
