RALEIGH, N.C. – With a 5-1 win Sunday afternoon, the NC State softball team completed a three-game sweep over Notre Dame in the opening weekend of conference play. The Wolfpack move to 17-6 and 3-0 in ACC after also defeating the Irish 3-2 and 5-3 Saturday.
NC State was led by a strong performance in the circle from sophomore Sydney Nester, who became just the second pitcher in the ACC to reach 10 wins on the season. Nester (10-4) threw the complete seven inning game, allowing just one run (unearned) on three hits with seven strikeouts.
The Pack totaled four hits by four different players, highlighted by Randi Farricker's two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning.
GAME RECAP
Notre Dame struck first in the with a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the first inning, however, Nester struck out the final batter of the frame to end the threat. The Wolfpack didn't stay down for long, as Brigette Nordberg roped a two-out two-RBI double into center field in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 lead that NC State would never relinquish.
Following Farricker's third inning home run, Notre Dame's best scoring chance came in the top of the fourth with two singles, however a fly out to right field left both stranded. Logan Morris would tack on another RBI to her team leading total of 24, with a sacrifice fly that was just shy of going over the left field fence.
