Pack Sweeps Doubleheader Against Norfolk State

RALEIGH – NC State softball outscored Norfolk State a combined 17-3 to win both games of Tuesday's doubleheader. The Wolfpack took game one 7-1 before closing out a six-inning, run-rule victory in game two, 10-2. NC State now moves to 19-6 on the season, including a 17-3 record at home.
Tatyana Forbes dominated the first game going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with one run scored. Forbes also tacked on a hit and two RBIs in game two of the day. Sam Russ contributed a solid performance at the plate going 4-for-8 with two runs scored and two RBIs across the two games.
Devin Wallace pitched all seven innings of game one for the 30th win of her NC State career. Wallace (6-2) allowed just one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Sam Gress earned her third win of the season in the second game, pitching all six innings. Gress (3-0) allowed just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
GAME 1 RECAP
Norfolk State struck early with a solo home run to lead off the second inning, but the Wolfpack quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame thanks to an RBI-double by Sam Sack, scoring Brigette Nordberg from first.
Carson Shaner gave the Pack their first lead of the day, following her third pinch hit home run of the season in the fifth inning.
Following an hour-long weather delay, NC State's offense came out hot with five runs off five hits in the bottom of the sixth. Randi Farricker drew a lead off walk before Nordberg hit the Pack's second home run of the game for a 4-1 advantage. Four consecutive hits scored the additional three runs in the inning.
GAME 2 RECAP
Unlike the first game, it was an early start for the Pack's offense, scoring three runs in the first inning. After drawing a walk, Forbes scored from first on an RBI-single by Morris. Two Norfolk State errors scored the additional two runs of the frame for a 3-0 NC State lead.
The Spartans closed the gap on a two-RBI single in the second inning, however, NC State continued taking advantage of Norfolk State's errors with another run in the bottom of the second. The Wolfpacks lead grew in the bottom of the third as five-consecutive batters reached base, highlighted by an RBI-double by Forbes, giving NC State a 7-2 lead.
Norfolk State threatened in the top of the fifth with three-consecutive singles before Gress and the Wolfpack defense worked around the scoring threat with a force out at home to hold the Spartans off the board.
Following a sacrifice fly in the fourth, NC State looked to walk it off in the bottom of the sixth. Logan Morris drew a lead off walk followed by a single from Rizzi before a second walk to Nordberg loaded the bases. Sack delivered her second double of the day, to scoring the winning runs.

NC State resumes ACC play with an important road series against #17/21 Virginia Tech, March 13-15. All three games will broadcast on ACCNX.

- Game two of the doubleheader marked only the second win of the year for NC State when not hitting a home run.
- Shaner is now the fourth NC State player to reach five home runs this season.
- Forbes' four hits in game one marked the first time a Wolfpack player has had four or more hits since Cheyenne Balzer in 2017.
