
#Pack9 Evens Series With 6-2 Win Over Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Behind home runs from Tyler McDonough, Patrick Bailey and Jose Torres in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings, No. 7 NC State baseball (13-1, 1-1 ACC) earned a 6-2 win over No. 23 Virginia (11-4, 1-1 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park.
With the win, the Wolfpack evened its series with the Cavaliers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Virginia got on the board early thanks to Zack Gelof's sac fly to right field in the first. Nic Kent led off the side with a double up the left field line, and advanced to third on a groundout to first to start the threat.
-The Pack tied things up in the fourth, as Jose Torres knocked in Vojtech Mensik with a single to right field. Mensik reached on a fielder's choice and got into scoring position on J.T. Jarrett's single through the right side.
-McDonough's leadoff homer to right field in the fifth gave NC State the narrow 2-1 advantage, but Virginia's Chris Newell went yard to lead off the bottom frame and tie things back up.
-Bailey homered in the seventh inning with a solo shot to right field, giving the Pack its one-run lead back.
-Torres and Bailey added insurance runs in the eighth, giving the Pack a 6-2 lead. Torres belted a two-run homer over the left center wall, scoring Mensik after he drew a one-out walk.
-Bailey then drove in Murr with an RBI single to the second baseman, as Murr reached on an error and got into scoring position on McDonough's walk.
-In the final four innings, the Pack only allowed three Virginia batters to reach base.
QUICK HITS
-Saturday was the 10th consecutive game the Pack has hit at least one home run in the game, and the seventh time this season the squad has hit two or more in a single game.
-Bailey leads the Pack's offense with six home runs this year, which is also the most by a hitter in the ACC.
-Bailey, McDonough and Murr all extended their reached base streaks to 14.
-Torres tallied a career-high three hits and drove in a career-best three runs.
-Bailey (2-for-3), Jonny Butler (2-for-5) and Tresh (2-for-5) also turned in multi-hit performances to contribute to the team's 11 on the day. NC State has tallied double-digit hits in 11 games this year.
-Bailey's two RBIs marked the sixth time this year he has driven in multiple runs in a single game.
-Nick Swiney (4-0) remains perfect on the mound after going seven strong, yielding five hits and two earned runs while fanning five.
-Sam Highfill additionally pitched two shutout innings to help the Pack secure the win.
