
Baseball Drops Series Finale At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Despite scoring first, No. 7 NC State baseball (13-2, 1-2 ACC) was unable to overcome a six-run second inning by No. 23 Virginia (12-4, 2-1 ACC) on Sunday at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park, falling 10-3 in the series finale.
With the loss, the Cavaliers take the weekend series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Luca Tresh helped the Pack strike first in the second inning as he reached on a one-out single to the shortstop, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Vojtech Mensik's base hit to center field.
-The Cavaliers wasted no time knotting the score in the bottom frame, as Alex Tappen led off with a double to left center then scored on Chris Newell's single to right center.
-Virginia proceeded to put up five more runs with two outs in the frame. A Logan Michaels RBI single gave the Cavs the lead, knocking in Newell.
-After a hit batter put two on, Max Cotier's 2-RBI triple and Zack Gelof's two-run homer to left center extended Virginia's lead to 6-1.
-NC State responded with a run in the third to cut away at its deficit. Austin Murr reached on a one-out error, then a wild pitch and groundout allowed him to threaten before Patrick Bailey's single to center field drove him in.
-In the fourth inning, Virginia regained its five-run lead. With runners in scoring position following a one-out walk and single and error, Cotier's base hit to right field plated another run.
-In the sixth, Tresh took first on a leadoff error, then Jonny Butler's double down the right field line started the threat for Mensik, who tallied his second RBI of the game with a groundout to the shortstop.
-A one-out solo homer by Gelof over the left field wall in the seventh extended Virginia's lead back to five.
-The Cavaliers plated two more runs in their half of the eighth, making the score 10-3, thanks to Brendan Rivoli's RBI triple to left center and Cotier's hard-hit ball to the shortstop with runners at the corners.

-Bailey, McDonough and Murr all extended their reached base streaks to 15.
-Tresh tallied his fourth multi-hit performance in the last five games, leading the team with a 2-for-4 outing while scoring two runs.
