
Wolfpack Earns Comeback Win Over Dukes, Clinches Series

RALEIGH – Thanks to a five-run thrill in the eighth inning, the No. 16 NC State baseball team (2-0) earned a 9-6 comeback win over James Madison (0-2) on Saturday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park.
With the win the Wolfpack clinched the series, extending its streak to 16 in series wins against nonconference opponents. The result also marked the team's sixth-straight win over the Dukes in the all-time series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-In just his second game as a member of the Pack, Austin Murr launched a ball to right field for a leadoff homer in the first.
-Patrick Bailey added another run in the frame thanks to a fielder's choice by the JMU shortstop, as he drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on Devonte Brown's single to start the threat.
-The Pack doubled its lead in the second, making it 4-0. Jose Torres had his first collegiate hit, a single through the right side, to score Terrell Tatum, who drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Torres then scored a run of his own on a wild pitch after moving to third on Murr's single that snuck past JMU's first baseman.
-James Madison managed to score four runs on three hits in the third to knot the score. With runners at first and second, Chase DeLauter brought in the first run with a single to right field. Kyle Novak followed up with a 2-RBI double to right center to cut the deficit to one, then a swinging strikeout passed ball brought the final run across.
-The Dukes took a 5-4 lead in the fourth, as DaVonn Griffin laced a one-out single to center field and scored on DeLauter's single to right center after stealing second.
-In the eighth, DeLauter walked in a run with the bases loaded to extend JMU's lead to two.
-The Wolfpack rallied back in the eighth with five runs on as many hits to regain its lead. J.T. Jarrett and pinch hitter Marek Chlup got things started with back-to-back singles, then advanced on a balk. Murr ripped a double to right center to clear the bases and knot the score, then with the bases loaded Jonny Butler delivered with a 2-RBI single through the right side.
-A wild pitch brought Brown across for the final run of the side.
QUICK HITS
-Brown (2-for-3), Butler (3-for-5) and Murr (3-for-5) all turned in multi-hit games. For Brown, it was his second consecutive multi-hit outing, and two of Murr's three hits were extra-base hits.
-Bailey drew a career-high four walks in the game.
-Murr and Butler additionally drove in three runs apiece. Butler matched his career high in RBIs.
-Saturday marked the fourth-straight game that the Pack has hit a home run dating back to May 31, 2019 vs. Campbell.
-Sam Highfill picked up his first collegiate win on the mound as he went 3.0 innings and allowed just one earned run on three hits.
-Klyman was credited with the save, his second of the year, as he managed to produce a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth. He was recently named to NCBWA's Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List.
