RALEIGH – The NC State softball team (16-11, 0-3 ACC) narrowly fell in its series finale with No. 25 Virginia Tech (21-4, 5-1 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Dail Stadium, 1-0.
A sacrifice fly in the fourth inning was the difference in the pitcher's duel, as the teams tallied a combined five hits in the contest.
Of Note
-Sam Russ extended her reached base streak to 19 this weekend, while Brigette Nordberg owns a seven-game streak after her 1-for-3 performance.
-Randi Farricker tallied a base hit for the fourth consecutive game, while Rizzi also collected a base hit.
-Devin Wallace (7-7) threw her eighth complete game of the season. She allowed just an earned run on two hits, issued four walks and fanned nine.
How It Happened
-Both teams put runners in scoring position early but couldn't get them across. Russ and Nordberg led off the home half of the first with a walk and infield single, respectively, but a double play and groundout ended the side.
-The Hokies managed to load the bases on a pair of walks and fielder's choice with two outs in the second, but a fly out to center field allowed the Wolfpack's defense to escape the jam.
-After three scoreless innings, Tech's Jayme Bailey's sacrifice fly to right field brought the game-winning run in after Kelsey Bennett led off the fourth with a triple to right center.
-A combined five runners from both squads were stranded in the final three-and-a-half innings. The Hokies had runners reach safely on a pair of walks and hit-by-pitch, while Rizzi reached on a hit-by-pitch in the fifth, Russ drew a walk in the sixth and Farricker hit a one-out single up the middle in the final frame.
