
Shipp Claims Co-Medalist Honors at Puerto Rico Classic

NC State junior finishes with a scorecard of six-under par to finish in a three-way tie for first
RIO GRANDE, PR – NC State men's golf junior Benjamin Shipp finished in a three-way tie for first place at the Puerto Rico Classic played at the Rio Mar Country Club.
Shipp entered Tuesday's final round in a four-way tie for first, but started his day with three bogeys on the front nine to fall out of the top spot. The Duluth, Ga., native rallied on the back nine though as as he birdied holes 10, 11 and 12 and had another birdie on 15 to finish the back-nine at four-under and his round at one-under.
Shipp finished the tournament with a three-round score of six-under par, 210 to claim medalists honors with Clemson's Bryson Nimmer and Middle Tennessee's Marcus Byrd.
It is third career victory for Shipp. He previously won the Golfweek Conference Challenge in September of 2017 and the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in October of 2018. In the 2018-19 season, Shipp now has two tournament victories and three total top-five finishes in six tournaments.
Shipp led the Pack to a fourth place finish at the Puerto Rico Classic. Georgia and Georgia Tech tied for first place, while Oklahoma finished in third place.
NC State senior Stephen Franken was next for the Pack with a 13th-place finish. After shooting a five-under par 67 in the first round on Sunday, the Raleigh native posted back-to-back one-over par 71s to record just his second not-top-10 finish of the 2018-19 season.
Junior Christian Salzer was next for the Pack in a tie for 30th place at two-over par for the tournament. Salzer shot a 74 and 71 in the first two rounds and finished with a one-over par 73 on Tuesday.
Senior Harrison Rhoades finished one shot back of Salzer in a tie for 36th place at three-over par. The Raleigh native shot a one-over par 73 in the final round after a 72 and 74 in the first two rounds.
Sophomore Easton Paxton rounds out the Pack lineup in a tie for 50th place. Paxton shot a 70 and 78 in the first two rounds and finished his tournament with a three-over par 75 on Tuesday.
NC State returns to action Sunday, March 10 when it begins competition in the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore.
