RALEIGH, N.C. – After sweeping its opening-weekend series, the 21st-ranked NC State baseball team will open a five-game road stretch at Elon Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Latham Park.
Â
Radio coverage will be available on WKNC 88.1 FM and on GoPack.com for premium subscribers with Andrew Sanders on the call. There will not be a live stream of the contest unfortunately.
Â
Both teams head into the matchup with perfect 3-0 records thanks to a sweep in the first series of the season.
Â
Last Time Out
The Wolfpack overcame a three-run deficit in Sunday's game to complete the series sweep against Bucknell with a 12-8 win.
Â
The Series
NC State and Elon have met 55 times in the history of the programs with the Wolfpack owning a 42-13 edge in the all-time series.
Â
Last Time Versus Elon
The Wolfpack won the most recent meeting with the Phoenix, earning a 6-2 victory at Latham Park on March 14, 2017. The game was scoreless through the first four innings before Elon plated the game's first run in the fifth, but NC State countered with three runs in the sixth and went on to win.
Â
Andy Cosgrove and Joe Dunand each hit solo home runs in that contest and Joe O'Donnell threw 3.1 innings of relief to earn the win on the mound.
Â
The Rundown on Elon
The Elon Phoenix turned in a 36-23 overall record in 2018 and have a strong core of players that returned to the squad for this season. Elon was picked to win the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), edging UNCW and Northeastern by three votes.
Â
The Phoenix earned three convincing wins over Lafayette in the season opener, as they scored 22 runs and held the Leopards to two. They tallied nine extra-base hits and their pitching staff only allowed one.
Â
Tuesday's starter Jared Wetherbee threw an inning in the season opener for the Phoenix and struck out the side. Last year, Wetherbee compiled a 4.07 ERA with a 2-1 record in 23 relief appearances. Tuesday's game will be his first collegiate start.
Â
Strong Debut for Edwards
Evan Edwards turned in an outstanding opening weekend, as the senior first baseman recorded six hits in 14 at-bats with 15 total bases, six RBI, five runs and two home runs. He finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle in the season opener last Friday, as he hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat of 2019, tripled in his second at-bat and doubled in his third at-bat of the year. He would have been the first NC State player to hit for the cycle since 2006.
Â
He compiled a .429 batting average with a 1.071 slugging percentage. His 15 total bases lead the ACC and his six hits are tied for the third most in the conference.
Â
McArthur Goes Grand for First Career Homer
Junior Lawson McArthur couldn't have picked a better time to hit his first career home run, as he belted a go-ahead grand slam in Sunday's series finale to help lift the Wolfpack to victory.
Â
Offensive Outburst
NC State compiled a .315 team batting average on opening weekend, which is the third-highest in the ACC. The Pack also tallied five home runs, tied for the second most, and four triples, which leads the conference.
Â
Stellar Defense
The Wolfpack was one of just two teams from the ACC that did not commit an error on opening weekend, as NC State had 104 total chances without a miscue.
