RALEIGH – Thanks to a complete performance and three second-half goals, NC State women's soccer sailed past Navy, 3-0, on Friday evening in the NCAA First Round at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
It is the fourth consecutive year and 12th time in program history the Wolfpack has advanced out of the first round of the tournament, as it improves to 11-6-4 overall while the Midshipmen end their season with a 16-3-3 record.
The Pack controlled possession a majority of the first half and held a 6-0 shot advantage with five corner kicks, but couldn't find the back of the net in the attacking third. The second half was a different story though, as it outshot the Mids 11-1 with four corners and produced three goals en route to the squad's sixth shutout victory of the season.
Lulu Guttenberger put away what ended up being the game-winning goal in the 55th minute, as she capitalized on the rebound of her own direct free kick at the top of the box for her third goal of the year. Leyah Hall-Robinson doubled the team's lead with a header goal off of a Guttenberger corner kick in the 75th minute for her third goal of the season.
Seconds later, Anna Toohey sealed the win after Krissi Schuster found her inside the box on the right side to tally her second goal of the year.
NC State will face third-seeded Arkansas in the NCAA Second Round Thurs., Nov. 21 at 5 p.m. ET in Provo, Utah. If the Pack were to win Thursday, it would face to winner of the Brigham Young vs. Louisville matchup Sat., Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. ET. The second and third rounds will be hosted by BYU.
