Senior Elly Henes claims first individual ACC cross country title of her career
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The NC State women's cross country team won its fourth-straight conference championship and the program's 25th-overall title as it took first place at the 2019 ACC Championships on Friday.
The Wolfpack women finished the meet with 64 points to edge out Florida State, which finished in second place with 76 points. NC State has now won four ACC team titles in a row dating back to the 2016 season. It is the longest streak for the program since it also won four straight from 1995 to 1998.
The team completed a perfect sweep of the women's titles on the day, as senior Elly Henes won the individual crown for the first time in her cross country career.
On the men's side, the Wolfpack placed eighth, led by All-ACC honorees Ian Shanklin and Gavin Gaynor.
WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP 6K RECAP:
Henes, a two-time All-American in cross country, claimed the individual conference title to lead the way for the Wolfpack women. After finishing as runner-up at the 2018 ACC Championships, Henes stayed at the front of the field for the entirety of Friday's race. Her 20:37.4 mark beat out the next-fastest runner by over 11 seconds for the Wolfpack's first individual title since 2010.
NC State put together a well-balanced attack and showed off its depth, earning more All-ACC nods than any other program racing at the meet.
Kelsey Chmiel (4th, 20:53.0), Julia Zachgo (12th, 21:07.4) and Savannah Shaw (21st, 21:22.0) joined Henes as All-ACC honorees for the Pack. It was the first all-conference designation for all three women.
Nevada Mareno (26th, 21:35.7) rounded out NC State's scorers as the Pack's top five runners all finished within the top-30 overall.
Isabel Zimmermann (35th 21:42.1), Mariah Howlett (38th, 21:46.6), Sam Bush (39th, 21:47.4), Dominique Clairmonte (53rd, 22:08.0) and Heather Holt (73rd, 22:30.8) also lined up for the Wolfpack.
MEN'S 8K RECAP:
Shanklin and Gaynor both secured the best ACC Championships finishes of their careers to claim All-ACC honors for the second season in a row.
Shanklin placed third overall in 24:22.7, a result that improved on his seventh-place finish from the 2018 season. Gaynor followed behind him and crossed the finish line in sixth place in 24:36.4.
