Women’s team earns automatic bid to NCAA Championships
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The NC State men's and women's cross country teams put together another strong showing at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Friday morning. The Wolfpack women captured their fourth-straight regional crown, while the men finished third in Friday morning's race at Panorama Farms.
With the victory at Regionals, the women automatically earned their 33rd NCAA Championships appearance. That number is more than any other Division I program in the nation. The men will await their fate for an at-large bid to Nationals, with that field set to be announced Saturday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m.
Wolfpack senior Elly Henes added to her list of 2019 accomplishments as she took home the individual title in the women's 6K.
WOMEN'S 6K RECAP:
Fifth-ranked NC State won the region with a total of 48 points, and all of the team's competitors finished in the top 30 in a field of over 250 runners. Three Wolfpack women earned top-10 finishes, with a total of six members of the squad turning in performances that earned them All-Region honors.
Henes, who claimed an individual ACC title just two weeks ago, led the field with a time of 19:48.9 to secure the regional crown on the women's side. After finishing as the runner-up at the meet in 2018, Henes beat out the rest of the competitors by six seconds on Friday.
Kelsey Chmiel took fourth place in 20:02.6 at her first regional meet. She was the highest freshman finisher in the women's 6K, and it was NC State's top finish by a first-year runner since Laura Hoer won the regional title as a rookie in 2010.
Julia Zachgo also placed in the top 10, with her 20:12.5 good for sixth overall. Mariah Howlett (19th, 20:46.9), Savannah Shaw (20th, 20:48.2) and Isabel Zimmermann (24th, 20:56.2) joined them in the top 25 to gain All-Region status. The honors were the first of Zachgo, Howlett and Shaw's careers, while Zimmermann repeated as an All-Region honoree.
Sam Bush (35th, 17:51.9) rounded out the Wolfpack's lineup at the meet.
MEN'S 10K RECAP:
The Pack entered the meet ranked ninth in the region on the men's side and finished six spots higher than its projected seed to take third place overall. NC State finished with 116 points behind Virginia (79 points) and Virginia Tech (109 points).
Junior Ian Shanklin led NC State with the best regional finish of his career. He finished the 10K course in 29:50.3 to finish sixth overall. Gavin Gaynor was the next Wolfpack runner across as he placed 18th with a time of 30:32.1.
Both of those men were named to the All-Region Team for the second season in a row, with Shanklin's designation marking the third All-Region honor of his career.
NC State did an impressive job of sticking to its usual strategy and running as a pack. Hannes Burger (27th, 30:44.9), Tim Bason (31st, 30:49.4) and Nate Kawalec (34th, 30:54.2) all finished within 10 seconds of one another to help the Pack solidify its third-place spot down the stretch.
Tanis Baldwin (67th, 31:39.7) and Ares Epps (107th, 32:17.8) also competed as part of the seven-member NC State lineup.
