SOUTHEAST REGIONAL SUCCESS:
2018 REGIONAL REWIND:
NC State's men's and women's cross country teams swept the NCAA Southeast Regional in 2018. The Wolfpack was one of three programs across the nation to sweep its region.
The Wolfpack women won their third-straight regional title. In addition to the team's first-place finish, all five scorers garnered All-Region honors as Elly Henes, Dominique Clairmonte, Nell Crosby, Isabel Zimmermann and Heather Holt finished in the top 25. Henes was runner-up at the 2018 regional meet, and Clairmonte joined her among the top five finishers.
On the men's side, NC State upset a pair of squads on the way to winning the Southeast Region for the ninth time since 2000. All five of the Pack's scorers were honored as All-Region performers with Ian Shanklin, Joe Bistritz, Edwin Rutto, Elijah Moskowitz and Gavin Gaynor earning the nod.
The result secured NC State's second sweep of the region in three seasons and gave both teams automatic berths to the 2018 NCAA Championships.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Wolfpack women won their fourth-straight conference championship and the program's 25th overall title as they took first place at the 2019 ACC Championships on Nov. 1. NC State has now won four ACC team titles in a row dating back to the 2016 season. It is the longest such streak for the program since it also won four straight from 1995 to 1998.
The team completed a perfect sweep of the women's titles as senior Elly Henes also won the individual crown for the first time in her cross country career. Kelsey Chmiel (4th), Julia Zachgo (12th) and Savannah Shaw (21st) joined her as All-ACC honorees.
Ian Shanklin (3rd) and Gavin Gaynor (7th) both secured the best conference finishes of their careers to claim All-ACC honors on the men's side.
PACK IN THE POLLS:
Following their ACC Championships victory, the Wolfpack women earned a season-best ranking of No. 5 as they head into the remainder of postseason action. The national standing is the best for the team since its 2017 postseason run when it was also ranked fifth in the country after the conference championships.
UP NEXT:
The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 23. Thirteen additional teams outside of the automatic qualifiers from regionals will receive at-large bids to round out the 31-team fields for the national meet.
