RALEIGH – Senior defender Kia Rankin's first goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time, as she put away the golden goal for the NC State women's soccer team in a 3-2 overtime thriller against Syracuse at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh, N.C., on Thursday night.
The Wolfpack picks up three points in conference play and improves to 7-5-4 (2-2-4 ACC), while the Orange fall to 3-10-2 (1-6-1 ACC) on the season.
'Cuse got on the board in the 12th minute thanks to Kailee Coonan's first goal of the season. Shannon Aviza found her on the right side from the top of the 18-yard box, and Coonan finished to the near right post.
Krissi Shuster netted the equalizer in the 34th minute with a long strike that snuck right under the crossbar. It was her third of the season.
Tziarra King put the Pack ahead going into the locker room with her 11th goal of the season following a free kick in the 42nd minute. Lulu Guttenberger took the kick and made the short pass to Ricci Walkling for the double assist.
Despite the Pack controlling the second half with a 14-4 shot advantage, Syracuse leveled the score thanks to Marisa Fischetti's first goal of the season in the 63rd minute. She tapped it in after a scramble in the box off of a corner kick.
The Pack tried to end it in regulation when King was brought down in the box three minutes later, but Syracuse goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx saved Walkling's penalty kick.
NC State went to overtime in ACC play for the fifth time this season, but Rankin put away the golden goal in the 93rd minute. Walkling played a ball to her in the left wing, and she finished to the top right corner from the left side of the six-yard box.
The Pack will close out its home regular season slate Sunday when it hosts Notre Dame in a 1 p.m. match at Dail Soccer Stadium. The team's 2019 senior class will be honored prior to kickoff, and the match will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
