Pack Splits Doubleheader With Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The NC State softball team split its doubleheader with Louisville on Friday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. After dropping the first game 4-2, the Wolfpack battled back to win game two 6-1.
NC State improves to 20-14 (4-6 ACC) on the season while the Cardinals, who are receiving votes for the top 25 of the latest national polls, move to 23-11 (3-5 ACC).
How It Happened
Game One
-Chandley Garner's solo shot to center field gave the Pack a 1-0 advantage in the first inning.
-The Cards threatened in the third with a pair of runners on following a one-out walk and single through the left side, but Alyssa Compton caught a line drive and tagged the runner heading to third for the inning-ending double play.
-In the fourth Louisville scored three runs on as many hits and an error. After a two-out double, a single through the right gap brought in the first run. Another RBI double followed by an error allowed the other two runs to score.
-NC State cut its deficit to one in the fifth thanks to Haylee Kobziak's bases-loaded walk.
-The Cards answered in the bottom frame to take a two-run lead. After a single to left center started the side, another base hit and an error tacked on another run.
-The Pack turned a 5-4-3 double play in the sixth to end the inning, but the side was retired in order in the seventh to end the game.
Game Two
-After two scoreless innings, Garner belted a solo homer down the left field line to give her team a 1-0 lead.
-NC State added four more runs on three hits in the fifth inning. Garner's RBI double to right field brought in the first run, scoring pinch runner Sam Russ from third after Madeline Curtis led off with a single up the middle. Timberlyn Shurbutt then hit a three-run blast to left field after Kobziak drew a two-out walk.
-The Cards plated their lone run of the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to left field after a walk and pair of singles loaded the bases. Compton turned another unassisted double play to end the inning though after catching a line drive and tagging second.
-In the top of the seventh Natalie Jones laced an RBI single to right field to tack on another run. Compton led off with a single up the middle and Macauley Prickett followed with a two-out single to right field to put two on for Jones.
-After the Cards got on base in the bottom half with a one-out single to third base, the Pack defense turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
