LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The NC State softball team was unable to overcome Louisville's hot bats on Saturday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium, falling 7-0 in its rubber match.
The Cardinals, who are receiving votes for the top 25 of the latest national polls, take the series and improve to 24-11 (4-5 ACC) while the Wolfpack moves to 20-15 (4-7 ACC) on the season.
How It Happened
-The Cards scored two runs on four hits in the first inning. A leadoff single and sacrifice bunt put a runner on second, and a two-out single to left field plated the first run. After another outfield single put runners on first and second a base hit up the middle brought the other run in.
-Louisville extended its lead to three in the second inning when a one-out triple followed by a single to left field allowed a run to score.
-In the bottom of the third a hit-by-pitch and single to center field put two on, but Alyssa Compton started a 6-5-4 double play to end the inning. It was the Pack's fifth double play turned this weekend and 16th of the season.
-A bases-clearing double to center field gave the Cards a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning. A single through the right side and bunt single started the side, and a fielder's choice and stolen base started the threat.
-NC State threated in the fifth with the bases loaded. Angie Rizzi broke up the no-hitter in the fifth with a leadoff single to left field, while Natalie Jones hit a one-out single through the left gap and Jade Caraway drew a two-out walk. A pop up caught in foul territory ended the side.
-In the sixth a leadoff single and error put a runner on second, and a groundout followed by a wild pitch plated a run to give the Cards a 7-0 lead.
-NC State tried to rally in the seventh when Jessica Moore hit a leadoff double to left field, but the next three batters were retired to end the game.
Inside The Box Score
-Devin Wallace (11-7) took the loss in the circle after throwing 1.1 innings and giving up three hits and as many runs. Kama Woodall relieved her in the second inning, giving up nine hits and three earned runs.
-Moore's double in the seventh was her second of the season while Kobziak, Rizzi and Jones each tallied a hit to give the team four in the contest.
