RALEIGH – Alyssa Compton's 2-RBI double in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the NC State softball team's 2-1 win over USC Upstate on Tuesday evening at Dail Stadium. Devin Wallace limited the Spartans to just two hits in her complete game effort, striking out seven batters in the pitcher's duel.
The Wolfpack improves to 19-13 on the season while the Spartans, who are receiving votes for the top 25 of the national polls, fall to 21-11.
How It Happened
-After the first two batters were retired in the frame, a solo shot to center field in the first inning gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
-Through the next three-and-a-half innings the teams only mustered up one combined hit, a single to left center by USC Upstate's Kayla Hussey in the bottom of the third.
-Angie Rizzi broke up Christina Biggerstaff's no-hitter in the fifth inning with a one-out single down the left field line.
-In the sixth inning Compton brought a pair of runs across with a two-out double to center field, giving the Pack a 2-1 lead over the Spartans. Caraway tallied the team's second hit of the game with a one-out single to the shortstop, and Haylee Kobziak's single that dropped just past the dirt in right field put runners at the corners for Compton.
-The Pack's defense shut down the Spartans in the seventh, allowing just a one-out walk as a pair of fielder's choices ended the game.
Inside The Box Score
-Wallace earned her 11th win of the season in her ninth complete game.
-Compton's double gives her a team-best seven on the season while Caraway's single gives her a team-best 29 hits.
