WILMINGTON, N.C. – The NC State softball team earned its third-straight win on Wednesday when it traveled to UNCW and defeated the Seahawks 4-2 at Boseman Field.
The Wolfpack scored two runs apiece in the first and fifth innings to pick up its seventh win in eight games. The squad improves to 11-5 on the season while UNCW falls to 4-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-NC State scored two runs on three hits in the first inning. Sam Russ drew a one-out walk and advanced on a groundout to second base, then scored on Cheyenne Balzer's RBI single up the left field line. Then after Alyssa Compton's outfield single put runners at the corners, pinch runner Haylee Kobziak scored from third on Lily Bishop's single up the middle.
-In the fifth inning the Pack added two more runs. Haylee Kobziak led off with a home run to right field, and Chandley Garner plated the second run on a passed ball after she drew a two-out walk and an outfield single and walk put her in scoring position.
-In the bottom frame UNCW plated its first run of the game. Kelsey Bryan reached on a Wolfpack error and stole second base, and a groundout followed by a double to left field allowed her to score.
-UNCW cut its deficit to two in the sixth. Leadoff batter Dominique Travers was hit-by-pitch and stole second. A strikeout swinging wild pitch put runners on the corners then a hard-hit ball to Shurbutt at third allowed Travers to score.
-The Seahawks tried to rally in the seventh with a pair of hits and fielder's choice that put runners on the corners, but Nimmo struck out the final batter to seal the win.
