RALEIGH – The NC State softball team battled with Ohio at Dail Stadium on Sunday to earn a 4-3 win in eight innings and clinch the Homewood Suites by Hilton RDU/RTP Invitational title.
The Wolfpack posted a 4-1 record on the weekend, improving to 10-5 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 7-3.
RYCHCIK'S REVIEW
"Our at-bats were outstanding today with 10 hits, and we had several line outs so the quality of our at-bats were great," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "We really worked the strike zone and made their pitcher (Danielle Stiene) work a lot. Kama (Woodall) gave me what she could and Devin (Wallace) held them to just three hits. It came down to Lily (Bishop) having a big at-bat in the eighth but there were a lot of good at-bats prior to the final inning.
"Our defense was outstanding. I really like the way we're playing right now and when we play the way we're supposed to it improves our team as a whole. We never got down on ourselves when they tied the score twice. We were able to hold our resiliency which allowed us to get the win."
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After two scoreless innings the Pack and Bobcats scored one run apiece in the third. Haley Finn led off the inning with a home run down the left field line while an RBI double to left field put Ohio on the board in the bottom frame.
-In the fifth Angie Rizzi scored on Timberlyn Shurbutt's sacrifice fly to left field after leading off the inning with an outfield single and advancing on a fielder's choice and groundout.
-The Bobcats knotted the game in the sixth with another RBI double after a walk and outfield single put a pair of runners on base.
-In the eighth Lily Bishop hit a two-run shot to right center to allow the Pack to take a 4-2 lead. Cheyenne Balzer was placed on second in result of the international tiebreaker rule, and a sacrifice bunt moved her to third base.
-Ohio tried to rally in the bottom half by scoring a run. Alex Day was placed on second to start the frame, and a pair of groundouts to Chandley Garner brought her across home plate. Alyssa Compton got the final out as she gloved a ground ball to Balzer at first.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Bishop and Garner both went 2-for-4 at the plate as the team combined for 10 hits on the day.
-Timberlyn Shurbutt hit her second triple of the season in the first inning.
-Bishop and Finn's home runs gives the team 10 this season.
-Kama Woodall started in the circle and threw two innings, and Devin Wallace threw the final six to pick up the win and improve to 5-2. They gave up a combined four hits and two earned runs.
