
Wolfpack Tops Santa Clara In PKs, Advances To Sweet 16

LOS ANGELES – For the second time in three years, the NC State women's soccer team is headed to the Sweet 16 after downing seventh-ranked Santa Clara in penalty kicks on Friday evening at UCLA's Wallis Annenberg Stadium in Los Angeles.
After the teams scored one goal apiece in regulation and neither could produce a goal in overtime, the Wolfpack advanced 5-4 in penalty kicks. The Pack moves to 11-6-4 overall while the Broncos end their season with a 17-3-2 record.
This is the fifth time in history that the program has advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship.

How It Happened
After a scoreless first half that featured a combined four shots on goal and six corner kicks, Santa Clara scored in the 61st minute when Maria Sanchez's strike from the top of the box found the lower left corner.
Seventeen minutes later, King scored her 10th goal of the season to knot the contest, finishing to the bottom right corner off of a double assist from Courtney Walker and Taylor Porter.
In the overtime periods, six of the Bronco's seven shots were on goal. Sydney Wootten was phenomenal in goal for the Pack, making 11 total saves as Santa Clara outshot the Pack 25-3 and won 13 corners compared to its three.
In penalty kicks the Pack converted all five of theirs, and Santa Clara's Courtney Ogren missed the fifth and final one.

NC State will face the winner of the UCLA vs. Minnesota matchup Sunday at 9 p.m. ET at Wallis Annenberg Stadium in the NCAA Third Round.
