Last Time Out
The Wolfpack advanced in penalty kicks (5-4) on Friday evening in its NCAA Second Round contest with Santa Clara in Los Angeles after a 1-1 result through 110 minutes of play. After the Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute, Tziarra King scored 17 minutes later for her 10th goal of the season.
NC State In The NCAA Tournament
Overall, NC State is 12-11-6 in the NCAA Championship, as 2018 marks the third consecutive season since 1994-96 that the program has earned an NCAA Championship berth. This is the 13th time the Wolfpack has made an appearance in the tournament, and fifth time the program has advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship.
A Special Class
The Wolfpack's senior class is the first class since 1989 to make two NCAA Third Round appearances in a four-year span. The class has compiled a 37-20-8 record over the past three seasons.
In 2016 the Pack advanced past Minnesota in penalty kicks in the first round, then defeated Pepperdine 1-0 in the second round en route to its other Sweet 16 appearance.
What's On The Line
If NC State were to advance out of the third round, it would face the winner of the Virginia Tech vs. top-seeded UNC-Chapel Hill contest Nov. 23 or 24 in the Elite Eight.
This would be the Pack's first time advancing to the Elite Eight since the tournament's expansion to 64 teams in 2001. The last time the program made an Elite Eight appearance was in 1995 when the tournament consisted of 24 teams and five rounds of competition.
Scouting UCLA
UCLA earned a 5-0 win on Friday evening in its NCAA Second Round match with Minnesota, and defeated San Jose State 5-0 in the first round. The Bruins finished second in the Pac-12 regular season standings (9-2-0), and are ranked No. 4 in the latest United Soccer Coaches rankings.
Ashley Sanchez leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and 32 points, while 11 other players have scored on multiple occasions this season. Goalkeepers Lauren Brzykcy and Teagan Micah have split time in goal this season, compiling a team goals-against average of .74 and allowing a combined 15 goals all season.
