Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With Fayetteville Tech

RALEIGH – The NC State softball team scored a combined 49 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep over Fayetteville Tech on Sunday afternoon at Dail Stadium. The Wolfpack won the first game 23-0 and game two 26-0.
Game One
After going three up, three down in the first inning, the Pack took an 11-0 lead in the second. The inning was highlighted by a double from Skylar Johnston and single by Sam Russ that pushed four total runs across, as well as a grand slam by Timberlyn Shurbutt.
The Pack tacked on a combined five runs in the third and fourth innings off of four doubles, a single and three errors, and four hits and an error in the fifth allowed for five more runs to score and give NC State a 21-0 lead. A pair of singles and a double in the sixth brought in the final two runs of the game.
Everyone in the lineup tallied at least one RBI, while six players turned in a multi-hit performance. Russ and Brigette Nordberg went 3-for-6, and Haylee Kobziak and Shurbutt each belted a home run.
Freshman pitcher Sydney Nester threw a complete game shutout, giving up five base hits while striking out 13 batters.
Game Two
NC State tallied five hits, including a two-run homer and pair of RBI doubles, to jump out to a 6-0 lead in the first. The Pack added two more in the second thanks to a 2-RBI triple by April Visser, then scored seven more in the third thanks to a pair of doubles from Randi Farricker and extra-base hits by Shurbutt and Chandley Garner. Nine more runs came across in the fifth on four hits and an error, and Garner's 2-RBI double in the sixth scored two more.
Nine players tallied at least one hit, as six had a multi-hit outing. Eight players recorded at least one RBI. Farricker and Garner led the team with four hits apiece, as Johnston and Farricker both homered. The Pack has hit two home runs in each of its four fall contests played.
Devin Wallace went the distance in the circle as she threw a one-hitter and struck out 11.
Up Next
The team will return to action Oct. 14 when it hosts UNCW in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Admission is free for all home fall games at Dail Stadium.
