ELON, N.C. – In the first meeting between the two programs at Elon's Rudd Field, the No. 30/21 NC State men's soccer team earned a 0-0 road draw in double overtime at undefeated Elon Tuesday evening.
Each side had one quality scoring chance in the final overtime period. NC State's Julius Duchscherer was stopped at point-blank range by an impressive kick save from Elon goalkeeper Matthew Jegier in the 103rd minute and Wolfpack freshman goalkeeper Leon Krapf came up big in the 110th, tipping a header by Tuki Tayali over the bar with 10 seconds remaining in the contest.
Duchscherer led all players with four shots. John Walden and Ronni Mleczkovicz each had three apiece for the Phoenix (3-0-4).
The first half of the match was a physical one, with the teams combining for 17 fouls and three yellow cards. NC State's best scoring chance of the opening 45 minutes came when freshman David Loera was brought down 20 yards from goal. Ade Taiwo lined up the free kick and got some good pace behind the shot, but the Elon wall did its job to prevent it from reaching the target.
Krapf made a key save in the 42nd minute following a Ronni Mleczkovicz free kick. The Elon defender fired a hard shot on target from 20 yards, but Krapf was in the right place to stop the initial shot and collect the rebound.
The Wolfpack improved coming out of the halftime break, out-shooting the Phoenix 5-3 over the course of the second half.
NC State (3-2-1) returns to action at home on Saturday, Sept. 23 when No. 4/6 Wake Forest comes to Dail Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live coverage provided by ACC Network Extra. In addition to a host of promotions at the match for Wolfpack fans, former NC State great and current United States U20 National Team head coach Tab Ramos will be in attendance.
