RALEIGH – The No. 30/21 NC State men's soccer team fell to visiting No. 4/6 Wake Forest Saturday evening, losing by a final score of 3-0.
NC State (3-3-1, 1-2-0 ACC) held a 3-2 advantage in shots as the teams went into halftime scoreless, but Wake Forest (8-1-1, 3-0-0 ACC) scored three goals in a span of eight minutes during the second half to take control of the match.
Five different Wolfpack players recorded shots in a physical match that featured 29 fouls and three cautions.
"I feel like there are good moments (so far in ACC play) and then there are moments when you just want to do a better job," NC State head coach George Kiefer said. "I noticed that in two of the matches, we have given up goals in short windows. We have to look at that. But give credit to Wake Forest for tonight. They are a good side. You are going to have your hands full when you play them, and they did well today."
NC State created more scoring opportunities early in the first half, with a David Norris header from a Simon Blotko cross in the 20th minute being one of the best chances. On the defensive end, freshman goalkeeper Leon Krapf made a big save on Steven Echevarria's shot in the 41st minute, stopping his attempt just six yards from goal.

Wake Forest broke open the scoring in the 58th minute when Luis Argudo scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season, beating Krapf low and to the far post 18 yards from goal. Echevarria then scored his second goal of the season with a header inside the near post in the 65th minute. Argudo added one more just 20 seconds later, scoring from distance after a well-placed long ball over the top from teammate Brandon Servania.
NC State's stepped up the pressure during the final ten minutes of the match, earning multiple free kicks in dangerous areas. Tyler Gabarra had the Wolfpack's best opportunity of the second 45 minutes, getting good pace on a shot from 20 yards but saw it unfortunately deflect off a Wake Forest defender and skim just wide of the goal in the 85th minute.
NC State returns to action at home on Tuesday, Sept. 26 when UNC Asheville visits Raleigh. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Bulldogs is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
