Wolfpack offense erupts for six runs in the ninth
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Freshman Michael Bienlien turned in a standout performance on the mound in his first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) start to lift the NC State baseball team to a 9-2 win in the series finale at Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium.
The Wolfpack led 3-1 heading to the top of the ninth and erupted for six runs in the frame to pull away from the Fighting Irish. Bienlien picked up his first collegiate win in the contest, while Notre Dame starter Brad Bass took the loss.
Game Recap
For the first time in the three-game series, NC State scored first in the contest. Freshman Will Wilson lined a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Classmate Brad Debo stepped to the plate with two outs and delivered an RBI single to left field, scoring Wilson to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead.
The Pack stretched the score to 2-0 in the top of the fifth. Brock Deatherage walked to lead off the frame and moved over to third base on a perfectly executed hit-and-run. Deatherage took off for second and Stephen Pitarra lined a single through the hole vacated by the shortstop breaking to cover the base.
Wilson hit a sharp ground ball to the Notre Dame shortstop, who flipped to the shortstop to start the double play but Deatherage raced home to score on the play pushing the NC State lead to 2-0.
Notre Dame (10-16, 4-8 ACC) trimmed the Wolfpack lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh after a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of Daniel Jung.
The Wolfpack countered in its next at-bat to extend the advantage to 3-1 following a sacrifice fly to center field by Joe Dunand.
Leading 3-1 heading to the top of the ninth, the NC State (15-14, 5-7 ACC) bats erupted for six runs on five hits to grab a 9-2 lead. Andy Cosgrove doubled to left field to start the inning and scored on an RBI single by Deatherage. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second and he raced home on a double down the left field line by Wilson to make it 5-1.
Debo singled through the left side to plate Wilson and Dunand stepped to the plate two batters later and launched his team-leading 10th home run of the year, a three-run blast over the left field wall to push the NC State lead to 9-2.
