Wolfpack garners second win over top-five opponent this season
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State baseball team picked up its second win against a top-five opponent this season with a 4-2 victory against No. 4 UNC-Chapel Hill Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium in the series finale.
Â
With the win, the Wolfpack snaps an 11-game winning streak for the Tar Heels and hands the squad their fourth loss in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. NC State also avoided the sweep, as the Pack has not been swept in a series this season.
Â
Wolfpack head coach Elliott Avent collected his 999th career win in the contest, inching closer to 1,000 wins.
Â
Redshirt senior Johnny Piedmonte earned the win on the mound for NC State (20-17, 8-10 ACC) with five shutout innings of relief to remain unbeaten on the year at 3-0. He struck out four batters, allowed four hits and walked just one. Freshman Michael Bienlien started for the Wolfpack and pitched four strong innings before handing the ball to Piedmonte.
Â
UNC-Chapel Hill (29-7, 14-4 ACC) starter Austin Bergner was charged with the loss after allowing four runs in 4.1 innings pitched.
Â
Avent's Additions
"It was such a tough series, UNC's playing so well right now," said head coach Elliott Avent. "I thought we played pretty well in both games. It's hard to come out today and play so well after two tough losses.
Â
"I thought Johnny [Piedmonte] was phenomenal out of the bullpen today and kept them at bay for the rest of the game, but we played really well today."
Â
Game Recap
For the third consecutive game, NC State plated the first run as junior Brock Deatherage launched a solo homer over the wall in right center to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead on his second round-tripper of the year in the third inning. The Pack tacked on an unearned run in the fourth on a double steal attempt, as the throw to the plate was dropped by the catcher allowing Josh McLain to score.
Â
The Wolfpack loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth after a pair of singles and a walk. Will Wilson dropped an RBI single into left field and McLain drew an RBI walk to extend the NC State advantage to 4-0. Â Â
Â
UNC-Chapel Hill countered in the bottom of the inning by loading the bases and plated a pair of runs to cut the NC State lead in half, 4-2. Brian Miller had the big hit in the frame for the Tar Heels, as he singled through the right side to drive in both runs.
Â
Turning Point
Following Miller's RBI single, Johnny Piedmonte entered the game for the Wolfpack and forced the next batter to lineout to Joe Dunand at shortstop, who made a quick snap throw to first base for the double play on a close play. Piedmonte struck out the next batter and escaped the base-loaded jam he inherited without allowing a run.
