Â
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State baseball team has made numerous trips to Boston College, but this weekend's trip will be special for a couple reasons. Saturday the teams will meet in the Sixth Annual ALS Awareness Game at Fenway Park, which is played annually to honor the Eagles former team captain Pete Frates who was diagnosed with the disease.
Â
The Wolfpack also has a close connection to the cause, as former standout Chris Combs was recently diagnosed and is also working to bring awareness. Saturday's game will be broadcast live on ESPNU and tickets are $10 for general admission.
Â
Additionally, Wolfpack head coach Elliott Avent enters the weekend one win shy of 1,000 for his career at 999.
Â
Friday's series opener is slated for 2:30 p.m. at Shea Field, Saturday's game is set for 4 p.m. at Fenway Park and the series finale will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Shea Field. Free admission for Friday and Sunday's games on Boston College's campus.
Â
Radio coverage will be available for all three games of the series on WKNC 88.1 FM and on GoPack.com for premium subscribers, but only Saturday's games will be broadcast on ESPNU and air live on WatchESPN.
Â
NC State enters the weekend with a 20-17 overall record and an 8-10 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) games, while Boston College is 12-22 on the year and 3-15 in league play.
Â
Last Time Out
In its last outing, the Wolfpack earned a 4-2 win at fourth-ranked UNC-Chapel Hill in the series finale on Sunday behind a couple strong pitching performances from freshman Michael Bienlien and redshirt senior Johnny Piedmonte. It was NC State's second top-five win of the season, as the Pack also defeated Louisville when they were ranked No. 1 in March.
Â
Boston College had its most recent game on Wednesday night at Fenway Park against Harvard halted due to inclement weather. The Eagles were leading 3-2 when heavy rains forced the game to be stopped. BC came up short against Dartmouth, 8-3, in its midweek game on Tuesday.
Â
The Series
NC State and Boston College have met 33 times in the history of the programs with the Wolfpack owning a 22-11 advantage in the all-time series.
Â
Last Time Versus Boston College
The teams last met in 2016 when Boston College won the decisive game three, 1-0, to clinch the series after the squads split the first two games of the series. Last season the Eagles advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals and had five players selected in the MLB Draft.
Â
Last Time at Boston College
NC State last traveled to Boston College in March 2015 when the teams split a pair of games, as Sunday's game three was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Wolfpack outlasted the Eagles in a 15-inning battle in the second game of the series, as Joe O'Donnell pitched 6.1 innings of relief to earn the win.
Â
After the game was tied at 3-3 for 11 innings, NC State erupted for six runs in the 15th inning to earn a 9-4 win.
Â
Avent Approaching 1,000 Career Wins
NC State head coach Elliott Avent is approaching 1,000 career wins, as he heads into the weekend with 999 to his credit. He would become the fifth active head coach in the ACC with 1,000 or more career wins.
Â
Additionally, Avent would join an elite group as only 15 active Division I head coaches have reached 1,000 career wins.
Â
Debo Leading the Way for ACC Freshmen
Wolfpack freshman Brad Debo ranks among the top 10 of the ACC with a .364 batting average, the best for a freshmen in the conference.
Â
#PackPair
The Wolfpack has turned 39 double plays this year, to lead the ACC and tie for the ninth-most in the NCAA. NC State has turned a double play in 24 of 34 games, highlighted by a season-high four double plays at UNCG.
