NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill to meet in series finale at 2 p.m. Sunday
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State baseball team dropped game two of the series against No. 4 UNC-Chapel Hill, 7-1, Saturday evening at Boshamer Stadium.
Â
With the win, the Tar Heels clinch the series but the Wolfpack will look to avoid the sweep in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. NC State has not been swept in a three-game series this season.
Â
Junior Brock Deatherage put NC State (19-17, 7-10 ACC) on top in the top of the second, as he laced an RBI single into right field allowing Brett Kinneman to score from second base to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead. It was the second consecutive game that the Pack has scored the game's first run and the 20th time this year that NCSU has scored first.
Â
UNC-Chapel Hill (29-6, 14-3 ACC) answered in the bottom of the frame to even the tally at one apiece. The Tar Heels loaded the bases and pushed a run across on a sacrifice fly to right field by Brandon Martorano.
Â
Evan Mendoza and Joe Dunand hit back-to-back singles to start the Wolfpack fourth, but a double play and a groundout ensued to halt the potential rally.
Â
In the sixth inning, the Heels tacked on three runs on four hits and took advantage of two miscues by the Wolfpack defense to extend the lead to 4-1. A wild pitch plated a run for UNC-CH in the seventh and they added two more in the eighth to own a 7-1 advantage.
Â
Brian Brown started on the mound for NC State and pitched five innings with three strikeouts before giving way to Tommy DeJuneas. Brown took the loss with three earned runs allowed, while Luca Dalatri improved to 4-2 on the year with the win for the Tar Heels.
Â
Deatherage led the Wolfpack at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, highlighted by an RBI while Dunand, Kinneman, Mendoza and Will Wilson each had one hit.
Â
NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill will return to the field for the series finale at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
