Tar Heels pull away from Wolfpack late
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State baseball team tried to mount a late rally in the ninth, but fourth-ranked UNC-Chapel Hill held on to earn a 7-2 win in game one of the series Friday night at Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The contest started as a pitcher's duel, as neither team's starting pitcher allowed a run through the first five innings. Preseason All-American J.B. Bukauskas pitched seven innings in the game to remain unbeaten on the year at 6-0, while Sean Adler was just as good for the Wolfpack but suffered the loss with two runs allowed in 5.2 innings.
Â
NC State (19-16, 7-9 ACC) struck first in the contest on an RBI single to right center off the bat of Josh McLain to take a 1-0 lead. Stephen Pitarra singled earlier in the frame and advanced to second on a groundout to score on McLain's base hit.
Â
UNC-Chapel Hill (28-6, 13-3 ACC) countered in the bottom of the frame on a two-run homer by Kyle Datres to grab a 2-1 lead. The Tar Heels added three runs in the seventh to pull away from the Pack, extending the advantage to 5-1.
Â
A two-run homer in the eighth by UNC's Cody Roberts added a few insurance runs for the Tar Heels. The Wolfpack loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth and tried to mount a rally, but was only able to get one run out of it.
Â
Pitarra led NC State at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored, while Brad Debo was 2-for-3 with a run. Brett Kinneman and McLain had one hit apiece.
Â
NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill will return to the field on Saturday afternoon for game two of the series at 4 p.m. at Boshamer stadium.
