Wolfpack tallies double-digit hits for 12th time this season
RALEIGH, N.C. – Redshirt senior Johnny Piedmonte took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against one of the nation's top offenses and the Wolfpack bats collected 15 hits to lift the NC State baseball team to a 10-1 win against UNCG Tuesday evening at Doak Field at Dail Park.
"I thought we played as good as we have played all year," said head coach Elliott Avent. "We played outstanding and it's kind of a combination of how we've been playing lately and tonight we put it all together."
Piedmonte was stellar on the mound for the Pack (19-15) to earn his second win in as many starts on the year. He struck out the side in the first and retired 13 consecutive batters from the third to the seventh inning, as UNCG (21-11) did not have a baserunner in the fourth, fifth or sixth.
"I thought that may have been the best game that Johnny [Piedmonte] has ever pitched," Avent added. "There are some other games that come to mind like the Navy game last year in the regional, but I thought he was incredible tonight."
"UNCG's a really good hitting team and I knew I had to locate my fastball," said Piedmonte. "I was trying to get ahead early and my command was good, so I wanted to keep having quick innings to get our team back in the dugout."
The Spartans entered the contest with a .335 team batting average, second best in the NCAA, but Piedmonte and the Wolfpack pitching staff limited the squad to four hits.
Brett Kinneman ignited the NC State offense with his sixth home run of the year, a three-run blast over the right field wall to give the Pack a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Brad Debo drove in a run in the third on a single up the middle, as Stephen Pitarra raced home from third base to make it 4-0.
The Wolfpack added a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend the advantage to 8-0. Will Wilson smacked a two-RBI single to left field and Joe Dunand hit his team-leading 12th home run to move into second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in that category.
Pitarra plated the other run in the fifth on an infield single, allowing Kinneman to score. UNCG tallied its lone run of the contest in the seventh to end the Pack's shutout bid. An error and a double by Debo pushed across the final two runs of the game to stretch the NC State lead to 10-1.
A pair of NC State freshmen, Debo and Wilson, each tallied four-hit performances in the game. It was the first of Debo's collegiate career and second for Wilson. Pitarra was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Brock Deatherage, Dunand, Kinneman and Evan Mendoza had one hit apiece.
Dalton Feeney relieved Piedmonte and pitched an inning before giving way to Cody Beckman, who pitched the ninth.
NC State returns to action this weekend when it travels to No. 5 UNC-Chapel Hill for a three-game series. Friday's game is set for 6:30 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
