NC State Baseball Edged in Pitcher’s Duel at Notre Dame, 2-1

Junior Brian Brown pitches season-long seven strong innings for the Wolfpack
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Despite a season-long seven innings pitched by junior pitcher Brian Brown, the NC State baseball team came up short in game two of the series at Notre Dame, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium.
The Wolfpack knotted the score at one in the top of the seventh, but the Fighting Irish loaded the bases in the ninth and recorded the walkoff win with a single through the right side.
Game Recap
Notre Dame broke through with the game's first run in the bottom of the second. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Fighting Irish and a sacrifice fly to right field drove in the runner from third to give UND a 1-0 lead.
NC State knotted the score at one in the top of the seventh. Joe Dunand led off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jack Conley. Brett Kinneman grounded out to the right side to allow Dunand to move over to third base and Brock Deatherage drove him in with a two-out single up the middle.
Dunand was hit-by-pitch to start the ninth for the Wolfpack, but was unable to get past first base as three consecutive outs followed.
In the bottom of the frame, NC State reliever Austin Staley struck out the first batter swinging on three straight pitches. A two-base error allowed an Irish runner to reach second base with one down in the inning.
Following a flyout to Deatherage in right field, a pair of walks ensued to load the bases with two outs. With the count full at 3-2 and the runners on the move, Notre Dame's Jake Shepski singled through the right side just past Will Wilson's diving glove to plate the winning run from third base.
On the Mound
- Brown started on the mound for NC State and delivered his best outing of the season with seven innings pitched, allowing just five hits (all singles) and one earned run to go along with four strikeouts.
- Staley relieved him and threw 1.2 innings giving up just one hit and one unearned run in addition to two strikeouts.
- For Notre Dame, lefty Michael Hearne matched Brown's performance with seven innings, five hits and one earned run allowed.
- Peter Solomon pitched two shutout innings to earn the win with two strikeouts.

- Josh McLain was also 2-for-4 in the contest and hit his ACC-leading 14th double in the game.
