Freshman Will Wilson drives in his team-leading 22nd RBI
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – On a wet and cold day at Frank Eck Stadium, the NC State baseball team just could not get the big hit when needed and dropped the series opener at Notre Dame, 4-1, Friday evening. The Wolfpack's players braved the elements, as mist continued to fall throughout the game and temperatures steadily declined.
Â
The Wolfpack and Irish will return to the field Saturday afternoon for game two of the series set to begin at 4:05 p.m.
Â
Game Recap
Notre Dame struck first in the contest on a solo home run by Jake Johnson to grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. NC State countered in its next at-bat to knot the score at one.
Â
Andy Cosgrove led off the inning with a single to center field and moved over to third following a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Freshman Will Wilson came up big for the Wolfpack with a two-out single up the middle to plate Cosgrove from third base.
Â
The Fighting Irish answered in the bottom half of the fifth with three runs to take a 4-1 lead. A pair of singles and a walk started the rally for Notre Dame to entice NC State to make a pitching change. Joe O'Donnell entered the game next for the Wolfpack and issued a pair of walks with the bases loaded and gave up an RBI single.
Â
NC State had runners at first and second with one out in the sixth, but a popup to third base and a fielder's choice followed to end the threat.
Â
The Wolfpack looked to regain momentum in the contest after Kent Klyman entered the game to pitch for NC State with runners on second and third with nobody out. The freshman struck out the first batter swinging, induced a popup to Wilson at second base and struck out a batter looking to escape the jam.
Â
Brock Deatherage opened the seventh with a leadoff single, but unfortunately for the Pack three outs ensued to end a would-be rally. Tommy DeJuneas had a two-out pinch-hit single in the ninth, but a groundout followed to end the game as Notre Dame held on for the win.
Â
NC State falls to 14-13 overall and 4-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while the Fighting Irish move to 9-15 and 3-7 in league action.
