RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Led by an incredible opening-round 67 by sophomore Stephen Franken, the NC State men's golf team kicked off the 2017 spring season Sunday with a very strong first day at the Puerto Rico Classic. Through one round of play at the Rio Mar Resort River Course, the Wolfpack is in second place with a team score of 283 (-5) and a mere two strokes behind No. 9 Georgia.

Franken currently leads the tournament field of 74 golfers with his 67 (-5). Recent Georgetown transfer Harrison Rhoades is not far behind, sitting tied for seventh with an opening-round 70 (-2).

The tournament field at the 2017 Puerto Rico Classic features four opponents ranked in the national top 22. Through one round, the Wolfpack is ahead of three of these teams (No. 15 Ole Miss, No. 17 UNC-CH, and No. 22 Clemson).

NC State golfers return to action Monday morning at 8 a.m. The Wolfpack will tee off from holes 1-4 and be paired up with competitors from No. 22 Clemson and Georgia.
