RALEIGH – Led by a comprehensive team effort that included eight players recording at least one point, the NC State men's soccer team cruised to a comfortable 4-2 victory over visiting Wright State Tuesday evening inside Dail Soccer Stadium.
Julius Duchscherer paced the Wolfpack with his third and fourth goals of the season while teammates Clayton Sparks and Jan-Luca Ahillen (first career Wolfpack goal) also found the back of the net for the Red & White. Nick Retzlaff (2 assists), Tanner Roberts (1), Simon Blotko (1), Stephen Elias (1), Travis Wannemuehler (1), and Sparks (1) also recorded assists on the four Wolfpack goals.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex McCauley made six saves en route to earning his 17th career victory.
Co-Horizon League preseason favorite Wright State (6-4-0) took an early lead in the 11th minute when Eric Lynch scored his fourth goal of the season on an assist from Peguy Ngatcha.
NC State (3-6-0) answered quickly, leveling the match and ending the Raiders' 294-minute shutout streak in the 18th minute on Duchscherer's first goal of the evening. Blotko played in Elias up the touchline and the Rye, N.Y., native whipped a service across the face of goal which Raiders' goalkeeper Joel Sundell was able to touch, but not collect. Duchscherer was waiting at the far post for the easy finish.
Just four minutes later, Duchscherer would give the Wolfpack a 2-1 advantage following a very nice passing sequence between Roberts and Retzlaff. The sophomore struck a hard, low shot from 18 yards to beat Sundell.
A scrum in the NC State penalty area led to Wright State's second goal of the evening in the 26th minute, as AJ Paterson was able to poke a bouncing ball from the grasp of McCauley and into the back of the net.
Sparks reclaimed the lead for the Wolfpack once and for all in the 36th minute, skillfully nodding down a Wannemuehler cross neatly inside the near post to make it 3-2.
Elias nearly made it 4-2 in the 56th minute when his shot from six yards rang squarely off the woodwork. Ahillen put the match away for the Pack in the 74th, hammering home a Sparks rebound to record the final goal of the evening.
NC State returns to action at home against local rival Duke on Friday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Dail Soccer Stadium with coverage provided by the ACC Network Extra.
