NC State Edged by Duke Friday Night

RALEIGH – Despite a strong performance, the NC State men's soccer team endured a tough 2-1 defeat to visiting Duke Friday night in front of a large crowd of 1,765 fans at Dail Soccer Stadium.
NC State outshot Duke by a 14-6 margin and took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on a Tanner Roberts goal before Duke equalized in the ninth minute and ultimately took the lead in the 75th.
Caleb Duvernay registered the first scoring attempt of the evening, a blistering shot from 25 yards out that went just wide of the far post. The Wolfpack would then score on its second chance when Simon Blotko executed a give-and-go with teammate Stephen Elias. Elias whipped a well-placed ball into the penalty area and Roberts nodded it down inside the near post to give the Pack an early advantage.
Duke (4-3-2, 1-2-1 ACC) responded quickly, scoring exactly three minutes later to level the match. Carter Manley and Brian White used a skillful passing display to create an advantageous situation in front of NC State goalkeeper Alex McCauley. White crossed the ball to Jared Golestani just before an onrushing McCauley could prevent it, and Golestani passed the ball into the open net.
NC State nearly reclaimed the lead in the 36th minute when Julius Duchscherer unleashed a hard shot on target from close range. Duke goalkeeper Robert Moewes was equal to the task and parried the sophomore midfielder's shot over the crossbar. Moewes would end the match with four saves.
Duke took the lead late in the second half after a foul from a Wolfpack defender just outside the penalty area gave the Blue Devils a scoring chance. Suniel Veerakone placed his free kick from 19 yards perfectly, striking the underside of the crossbar and finding the back of the net for the decisive goal.
The Wolfpack pressed hard during the final eight minutes of the match, recording three shots during this span. NC State's best late scoring opportunity did not result in a shot, as a dangerous cross played across the six-yard box in the 89th minute was narrowly out an attacking player's reach.
NC State (3-7-0, 0-4-0 ACC) returns to action at No. 5 Clemson on Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be carried live on ACC Network Extra.
