RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team returns to Raleigh for its ACC home opener against No. 24 Notre Dame Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Dail soccer Stadium. The Wolfpack enters the match with a 7-2-0 (1-0-0 ACC) record and have won six straight and recorded four consecutive shutouts.
Scouting Notre Dame:
Notre Dame enters the match on a streak of three consecutive ties and a 5-1-3 (0-0-1 ACC) record. The Fighting Irish recently tied No. 1 Stanford 2-2 in Palo Alto, Claif., and have only allowed five goals all season.
The team has recorded six shutouts on the year and is on a six-match unbeaten run. Jennifer Westendorf paces the attack. The freshman leads the team with four goals for eight points. Meghan Doyle, Taylor Klawunder and Karin Muya are tied for second on the team with four points each.
Wolfpack on Fire:
NC State's attacking unit has scored 23 goals from 22 assists just nine games into the season. The Wolfpack's scoring offense is ranked No. 19 in the NCAA with 2.56 goals per match. The team is top-25 in total goals, total assists, total points, assists per match and points per match.
Six Wolfpackers are multi-goal scorers and 13 players have already found their way onto the score sheet with either a goal or an assist.
Lockdown Defense:
The Wolfpack defense hasn't allowed a goal in 425 minutes and has produced four straight shutouts. The Pack midfield and backline has done well in protecting goalie Sydney Wootten by blocking shots and forcing teams into low percentage shots.
When tested, the San Diego, Calif., native has been phenomenal, recording 30 saves on the year and dropping her goals against average from 1.56 to 0.81.
Pack in the Polls:
After a win over No. 7 UNC, the Pack moved into several national polls. It's ranked 17th in the HeroSports Bennett Rank, 23rd in the Soccer America Poll, 27th in the Top Drawer Soccer National Poll, 29th in RPI and 35th in the NSCAA National Poll.
Players of the Week:
The team's play also caught the eye of soccer organizations, as two from the team were featured as players of the week. Wootten was chosen as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week and Kristina Schuster was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week.
